Want to see how I create my courses?

note: The course I was working on while I was writing this How I Create My Courses series is Creative Journal Magic.

I share all sorts of my art work in process, but I have never shared a workshop or course in process.  I always create my courses on my own, and then share.  Not out of a sense of secrecy or anything.  It’s just what I’ve always done.  So today I wanted to try something new.

And since this is a new idea, I have no idea what will happen but I feel inspired to try.

Normally, my whole creative process for workshops happens in my journal.  Today, instead of doing all of this in my journal, I am speaking it all into the camera.

My whole process for creating a creativity workshop.

Where I am, trying to get clarity on what I want to create and how I want to create it. I figure this may be interesting to follow if you want to create your own classes of some kind, or even if not.

I know I always like to get a peek into someone else’s creative process.

So this video is kind of like verbal journaling.  You can see I don’t know where I am going when I start – but I still end up somewhere really cool:

I didn’t know what would happen when I started recording.

And here is what happened: I started with a ton of ideas of what to do but no idea about how to bring it all together. I ended with a clear plan for my course.

Yay!

And now I’m off to work on the next part… I will create another video to show you how that part goes.

    Andrea,

Thank you so much for sharing your creative process. I love your videos and weekly emails. This video really hit home. I think I need to make the commitment to my journal practice first, and build from there. Very inspiring!

It’s an amazing idea to share your process Andrea ! Oh I’m so hoping I can take the class you are preparing ! This sounds amazing and the kind of support I need to build a strong practice.

I have an idea for your framework, feel free to use it or not.
You could use a ning with groups. It’s a more expensive option but so practical. The first group to visit would be the soul practice. There would be nothing else at the beginning, during the 4 weeks.
Then you would be able to add the new modules at your pace while adding new group for that.
For the payment I wanna mention a paypal option that feels appropriate according to me :
the abonnement. The fee could be middle but repeated every month. People would be able to begin when they want and not all at the same time, and they would stop their abonnement when they will. That would be really flexible, with a free stream of people coming in an out, and taking their time for some module or going faster, jumping from a module to another.
There is an option to protect your videos in vimeo so that they cannot be saved on the computer.
This would avoid that people take all the material in one day ;)
Anyway, a community to share work is so useful to sustain a practice that I don’t think someone would.
OK, I love brainstorming like that and you probably have your own idea !!!
That form could be useful for me too by my self-growth workshop. I just thought that I would share my ideas because you are so cool sharing your process. Yay to you !

Thanks Scylliane. I tend to work more on that part afterwards… once I am clearer on what the lessons are, and how they work together, and what assignments each lesson needs – then I look at the best way to deliver them. This is why I get clear on the purpose right from the beginning – so that every decision about the workshop is made in alignment with that purpose. There are so many ways to deliver it – but which way most serves the purpose?

The extra modules I mentioned are not something I am doing now… that’s just brainstorming. My calendar only has enough space for me to work on one course right now. So the other modules are in no way attached to what I am doing now – they are something I can do in the future…. it’s like I am putting those ideas down, saying I can add them later so I am not forgetting about them or tossing them aside, but I do have to put them down so I can focus on this for now.

OK that’s different then. Anyway while brainstorming about your video I found something that could totally fit my self-growth workshops, so thanks again for opening this space to us !

That is great! That’s where I think the real benefit of sharing the process is, I think. I made some exciting progress on this today – I’ll share more this week.

Hi.. Andrea.. I so like how you are willing to share your process… and think things out into being…. This is where seem to get jumbled up myself.. I am trying to do a million things.. and not completing any… lol. But what I would like to do.. is be able to focus on one thing.. and then watch it bloom and flourish… I like how you break it down into points… and you said a possibility of modules… that sounds get like little nibblets to try… and see where you want to go with it… see which was your creative spirit takes you…so many things to delve into….. I know for me keeping things smaller rather than larger.. makes it less overwhelming and also.. lets my creativity sneak out easier.. with a little more natural flow… so again.. like how you talk it out… and also an learning from you… You are awesome Andrea.. keep up the great work.. and keep smiling!!!

    • andrea says:

Thanks Sheri! It is overwhelming and frustrating because we all usually have way more ideas than we can actually use which can make it so hard to move forward, when there are so many ways to move sideways instead… so focusing in on just the ones that fit best right now is really important.
