Stepping out of your day job and into your creative dream

I love the Stepping our of your Day Job and into your Creative Dream interview series. This is a series of interviews I did in 2010 with inspiring creative entrepreneurs, when I was preparing to step out of my day job and into my Creative Dream.

The interviews are filled with wisdom and insight and inspiration and energy for creating your own path into your creative dream.

This page has links to all of the interviews and some of the resources that have helped me create and develop my business.  (some of the links are affiliate links, which means i believe in the products so much that i sell them!)

I get asked all the time “How did you do your website?”  “Where did you learn about business?” So I put all of my favourite tools and resources together right here on this page.

Building your very own super-cool website and/or blog:

I think setting up a self-hosted WordPress blog (which can be used to create a web site and/or a blog) is the best way to go. WordPress is free, super flexible and super easy.  I heart WordPress!

But, when I was getting started, the thought of “self-hosting” my WordPress blog felt a little daunting… until i discovered Dream Host.  With Dream Host this is ridiculously easy to do.  Click one button and *voila* you’ve got your very own WordPress blog/site and you can do anything you want with it.  As my business and website grew it was easy to upgrade to my own virtual private server to accommodate all of the traffic.

Once I had WordPress going, I got the Thesis Theme for WordPress.  Thesis helps you to customize and create a space that look and feels like *you*.  (Thesis makes DIY easier – but it’s still DIY.  If you have no experience building websites and don’t want to learn how to code – it may be best to hire a designer.)  It also helps to optimize your site for search engines, so that people can find you.

There are cheaper and even free options out there but I don’t recommend them if you are starting a blog/website for the purpose of growing your business.  But if you are not ready to invest just yet – you can use wordpress.com to get started blogging for free.

Turning a creative dream into a viable business is difficult to do on your own.  Luckily there is a lot of support out there.
